Skeuomorphic design

Well the other week when “Apple” announced the upcoming “iOS 7″ was being released later this year a strange and wonderful word was banded around… Skeuomorphic design…What the? It seems that this is the thing which “Apple” are trying to come away from in their latest UI design, so I know it is an epic! and hench! word but basically its what they are trying to shelve. So what is “Skeuomorphic”? To start with it has been an age old challenge to design and create things which reflect real life as closely as possible, this is the basis of Skeuomorphic or making stuff look like stuff. If you produce a button on […]

Its not often that you come across a services which is so outstanding that you want to shout and scream about it. Well I have been extremely impressed with the service and quality of moo.com since I started using them a few years ago, their whole system seems to make me smile every time I use it. Business owner or entrepreneur…is there a difference?

My first blog in months! and I thought it was only right to write about what has been keeping me away from updating my content for so long. Well it has now been a year since I created my business “Sorbrook” and things have gone from strength to strength though now I am starting to be even more creative in what I am doing and having to shift priorities and ways that I do business. My client base has matured over the last year and the people I now do business with are more than just business acquaintances, I feel they are more like a business family. This has become […]

What to avoid when advertising your brand with a flyer

Everyone wants to put across the right impression when promoting their business, but there are some simple things which need to be taken into account to ensure your brand looks professional. Let’s take a basic flyer for our example for now. It’s all very well trying to stand out from the crowd but certain things on your flyer need to be avoided. 5 things not to do: 1. Don’t capitalise text to make it stand out. The human brain recognises shapes of words not just of letters and when all letters are capitalised the normal word shape is lost, This is why all UK road signs back in the 50’s […]

When Good Brand Marketing Sways Your Choice

Here’s a funny one for you.. I just purchased car breakdown cover as I know in the coming months I may need to make a few long journeys. Now I didn’t go to google and type in Breakdown Recovery, instead I just typed “The AA”. So Why is that? I asked myself, well I know I must have seen at least 3 adverts on the TV in the last few days and I have seen a number of their vans around in this cold weather and I seem to remember I had an email from them as I had been looking into Car Insurance. This just shows that if your […]

Creating for the Hotel Industry

What a year it has been so far! Late last year we were lucky enough to secure 3 website design requests from some amazing hotels around the country, which I personally thought was fantastic for our growing business and gives Sorbrook some vital creative and technical ability to offer the same service to other Hotels, B&B’s and Holiday homes. With these new clients we have not only created brand and webdesign but we have had to integrate booking systems, all three of which opted for the Freetobook platform initially. This was our first encounter with Freetobook and after connecting with them on social networks and exchanging emails they have now […]

Day of Brands

For Christmas someone very kindly bought me a book about logo design called “Logo Design Love” which is by the well known designer David Airey of Northern Ireland. Now to be honest I am not a big reader but I had a brief read and he came up with the concept of 33 logos in 33 minutes, which basically translates to taking photos of the first logos and brands you see in the morning within 33 minutes. Now I decided to place a new spin on this by doing this in video form and I have created “Day of Brands” where you can see what brands I come across whilst […]

Branding, can it really be so hard?

Just a week ago I picked up our local free newspaper and discovered a branding change. Now as branding goes this was still in keeping with the paper but I felt the whole design looked rushed and really not the work of a brand designer. Now as I see it there are some glaringly obvious things with this logo which the average person on the street would possibly discover to being not quite right. Here are my observations of the NEW logo: The logo apart from the name does not really relate to the previous version (this will lose brand recognition) The tag line is at such an angle that […]
